Year 4

Welcome back, Year 4 — and hope you had a good holiday.

We are excited to announce that our very first Cranmere Primary Junior Spelling Bee will be taking place this year!

As part of this event, Year 4 pupils are invited to put their spelling skills to the test by learning a set of 40 words taken from the National Curriculum spelling list for their year group.

During the week beginning Wednesday 15th April, children will be practising these words in class and will also bring them home to continue their learning. We strongly encourage all pupils to have a go, as this is a great opportunity to build confidence and develop their spelling skills. Children will not be learning their weekly spellings for these two weeks.

On Thursday 23rd and Friday 24th April, children will be assessed on 20 of the words from the list. The top performers will then be selected to represent their class.

The two winners from each year group will go on to compete in the Spelling Bee Final, which will be held in the school hall on Thursday 21st May. There will be a prize awarded to the overall Spelling Bee Champion.

We look forward to seeing the children’s enthusiasm and wish them the very best of luck!

P.E.

PE days for Lemurs  will be on a Tuesday and Thursday and for Puffins on a Monday and Friday

This term, the children will be learning yoga and rounders. After half term, Year 4 will be learning athletics and gymnastics. If any changes are needed due to school events, we will let you know.

Please ensure that pupils arrive in their PE kit on PE days, and that all clothing is clearly named to avoid items being misplaced.

Earrings should be removed for PE wherever possible. However, if a child has recently had their ears pierced and they cannot be taken out, they may be covered with plasters for PE rather than sitting out, as confirmed by Mr Gilbert.

Homework

Homework is an important part of the learning process, and we appreciate the time that you spend helping your child with their homework. As you are aware, our homework policy has been updated.

Reading - In year 4, children should read for 20 minutes every day and record this in their home school diaries.  Their reading diaries will be checked every week by an adult.

Spellings - The children are expected to practice their weekly spellings and complete one task which is recorded in spelling homework books. These are due in on a Thursday. The children can also revise their spellings on spelling shed.

Spellings will be tested each week on a Friday and new spellings will be introduced.

Times tables-  Year 4 pupils need to practise their times tables every evening for 10 minutes they can use Times Tables Rockstars to facilitate this if they wish. In addition to this, the children will bring home a 'My times tables booklet' based on the times tables they will be studying in class.

Each half term, we will set a creative homework. Please see our termly newsletters for details of this.

End of the day

If you would like to speak to your child's class teacher, please email the office to arrange an appointment.
